MOVING HOUSE CHECKLIST
Here is a moving house checklist of the organisations and people you will need to inform when you are moving home. Many of these you can now do online.
UTILITIES
Contact your current and new electricity, gas and water companies. (moving home is a great time to review your suppliers and switch if you can save money)
LOCAL AUTHORITIES
Inform your Council Tax office, and your new one about your change of address. Re-register to vote when you move to a new house. (You may be able do all of this online) If you use the local library inform them also.
BENEFITS
Advise child benefit office, advise pensions, advise working families tax credit.
TAX OFFICE
Contact HMRC to give them your new address details.
INSURANCE
Inform all of your insurance companies of your change of address. A new address may require a change to the policy and premium.
SECURITY
Leave operating instructions/ code of alarm system for new home owners, ensure current owners of your new home leave you some instructions such as alarm codes etc.
CARS
Advise DVLA of your new address (you need to change the address on your driving licence, car registration etc) you will also need to inform your car insurance company and any motoring organisations (ie AA, RAC etc) of your new address.
FINANCIAL
Inform your bank, credit card companies, store cards and Mortgage provider that you’re changing your address. If you have any standing orders for loans or hire purchase agreements, make sure you give your new details to the companies. If you have National Savings certificates, premium bonds or shares you need to inform them also.
FORWARDING ADDRESS
Contact post office for re-direction, (give at least 2 weeks’ notice to set up this service) leave a forwarding address at your old home(ensure the home owners at the property you are moving to have done the same).
MEDICAL
If you’re moving out of the area you must de-register with your doctor and dentist and set up with new ones. If you have private medical insurance, You need to advise them of your new address.
TELEPHONE & INTERNET
Advise telephone company at your old home that you are moving and if possible transfer your number to your new home. Check that your internet provider operates in the area you’re moving to – you may need to organise a new supplier.
SCHOOLS
Inform existing schools of your new address and contact details. Arrange new school if needed.
TELEVISION
Inform TV licensing you are moving home – take your existing license with you. Advise your cable/ satellite provider of your move. (You can transfer your TV licence to your new address online.)
PETS
If you have pets, don’t forget to transfer their records to a new vet.
SUBSCRIPTIONS
Don’t forget to change your address for any subscriptions you have, e.g. publications, clubs and organisations.
RENTED ACCOMMODATION
If you’re moving from rented accommodation, check how much notice you need to give your landlord.
EMPLOYER
Give your employer your new address details. They also need this for PAYE purposes
